Bliss

Written in the 1880's, I know much of the literary, religious, and art references are over my head. Most of it sounds like a commentary of a wealthy, intelligent culture snob who is engrossed in talking about his taste in everything, but its not obnoxious, just over consuming. The story is still good...des Esseintes the last of his bloodline, wealthy, well-educated in theology and Latin, but can't relate to anyone and thinks society is full of idiots moves to the outskirts of France to isolate himself in his books, art, and all human contact. Its hard to pinpoint the deal with him... sometimes he seems twisted, over the top, or too full of himself, but I think its something I'd appreciate the more I read it through. Finally something I didn't have stop reading midway.
